Megan Thomas, Graduate Intern
under the supervision of Tina Motley, LCSW
Megan is entering the counseling profession after retiring as a Commander from the Navy with over 21 years of service. Megan graduated from the United States Naval Academy with a B.S. in Oceanography and the Naval Postgraduate School with an M.S. in Applied Science Physical Oceanography. While she enjoyed the technical aspects of her time in the Navy, she found her ultimate calling in the relationships she built with her fellow officers and sailors. Time spent investing in getting to know the unique stories of her fellow service members gave true meaning to Megan’s service.
In addition to her military career, Megan has also spent time in the classroom building relationships with students. As a military instructor at the United States Naval Academy, Megan invested in students studying oceanography in the classroom, as an academic advisor, and even onboard their research laboratory vessel. Megan also enjoyed the relationships she built with students at the middle and high school levels teaching mathematics at Annapolis Area Christian School and science and mathematics at Veritas School here in Richmond, VA.
Megan’s unique understanding of the importance of relationships and hearing each person’s unique personal story has its foundation in her own relationship with Jesus. Megan firmly believes that hope and healing can be found with the Christian faith as one’s foundation and approaches each counseling relationship with the fruits of the Spirit in mind. As an intern in her final field experiences at Liberty University, Megan feels called to continue serving others through counseling. Megan works from a person centered approach and incorporates cognitive behavioral therapy techniques into her practice.
In her free time, Megan enjoys spending time outdoors with her two daughters, husband, and very active dogs.
