Individual Counseling

Individual Counseling in Virginia

Serving individuals across Virginia with in-person and online counseling.

Individual counseling is the primary way we work with clients at Fig Tree Therapy. It provides a consistent, focused space to understand what is happening beneath the surface and begin meaningful change.

People come to counseling for many different reasons—anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship strain, life transitions, or a general sense that something is not right. Sometimes the issue is clear. Other times, there is just a sense of being overwhelmed, stuck, or not fully yourself.

Wherever you are starting, the goal is not simply to manage symptoms. The goal is to understand what is driving them.

A Whole-Person Approach

We approach counseling through a biopsychosocialspiritual lens. That means we are paying attention to:

  • the body and nervous system
  • patterns of thinking and emotion
  • relationships and life context
  • and the spiritual life

People are complex. If we want to understand mental health well, we have to be willing to look at the whole person.

What Counseling Looks Like

Counseling is a structured process. It is not just talking, and it is not advice-giving.

In individual counseling, we work to:

  • identify patterns that are contributing to distress
  • understand underlying experiences and influences
  • address unprocessed trauma when present
  • develop practical skills for regulation and stability
  • move toward clearer thinking, healthier relationships, and greater consistency

We use evidence-based approaches such as EMDR and cognitive-behavioral strategies when appropriate, while tailoring the work to each individual rather than applying a one-size-fits-all model.

A Christian Perspective

We operate from a Christian worldview.  We view human beings through a Biblical lens and believe we are created in the image of God.

This does not replace clinical care. It deepens it.

We recognize that emotional and psychological struggles often intersect with questions of identity, meaning, truth, and relationship with God. Our goal is to thoughtfully integrate faith in a way that supports healing, not bypasses it.

When to Consider Individual Counseling

You may benefit from counseling if:

  • you feel overwhelmed, anxious, or persistently low
  • you are dealing with past or present trauma
  • your relationships feel strained or difficult
  • you find yourself stuck in patterns you cannot seem to change
  • you want to better understand yourself and move toward stability

Moving Toward Change

Change is possible, but it is usually not immediate.

It requires time, honesty, and a willingness to look at what is real.

Over time, individual counseling can lead to:

  • greater emotional regulation
  • clearer thinking
  • stronger relationships
  • and a more grounded, stable way of living

If you are ready to begin, we would be honored to walk with you.
