Nancy Hussar, NP
Nancy graduated from VCU with a degree in nursing in 1986. She has worked in various areas of nursing with a focus on medical/surgical nursing and psychiatry. Her other various nursing roles have included hospice nursing, home care, and some teaching in both psych and med/surg nursing. She spent 3 years in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and 3 years in Cotonou, Benin as an expatriate spouse of a Diplomatic Security Agent. While in Benin she served as the Community Liaison Officer for the embassy. In that role she helped other expatriates from the embassy prepare and adjust to life overseas. She worked closely with the regional psychiatrist and other mission officers aiding in crisis intervention and serving on the emergency preparedness team.
Nancy completed her Masters in nursing with certification as a Nurse Practitioner in Psychiatry from the University of Cincinnati in 2013. Prior to this chapter in her life she had felt a calling from God to help those struggling with life and mental health challenges.
After graduation in 2013 Nancy worked at a community service board which afforded a very broad spectrum of mental health and substance abuse experience. Later psych NP roles have been with a UVA family practice as well as running her own practice for 5 years.
She joined Fig Tree in 2024. In this role she hopes to share her compassion, empathy and faith with her colleagues and clients. She is licensed to prescribe medications and is also available for therapy.
In her role as a nurse and nurse practitioner, therapy has been a natural fit. She has always been teaching or counseling as a nurse. She has experience in grief therapy as her role as a hospice nurse. She gained experience in family dynamics both in her hospice and various nursing roles. As an NP she uses her knowledge to incorporate a holistic approach to therapy. She appreciates the interaction of the mind body and spirit in healing and mental health. She uses a narrative approach and also CBT. She views life and the world through a Biblical lens and incorporates Biblical teaching and principles into therapy. She has worked with clients in all age groups. Her preference is older adolescents and adults. She can recommend various techniques and resources for a variety of mental health conditions and life events.
Outside of work she is busy with her husband and family. She has 5 grown children. One child is still in college. She also has one granddaughter age 3 and another one due in May 2025. She is also mother to a number of pets including: 5 dogs, 2 cats, a bird and guinea pig. She obviously loves animals and enjoys the outdoors. She is native to the Richmond area so naturally loves Virginia and U.S. history. She loves to sing and is active in her church. When time allows she likes to read, crochet and do a variety of craft projects. She has a zest for life and hopes to bring joy into others’ lives and help them discover their full God given potential.
