Christian DBT: How is it Different?

Before diving into Christian DBT, it’s important to understand the fundamentals of Dialectical Behavior Therapy itself. DBT was originally developed in the 1980’s by psychologist Marsha Linehan to treat borderline personality disorder (BPD). However, it has since been adapted to help individuals with a range of mental health issues, including depression, anxiety, and eating disorders.

We have observed that the use of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills has had a significant and beneficial effect on many individuals. These skills have proven to be valuable tools in helping people improve their emotional regulation and interpersonal relationships, leading to positive changes in their lives.

This time, we have something completely new to offer. We are developing material for this group using contributions from Marsha Linehan, Lane Pederson, other Christians, and our own experiences.

What Is Christian DBT?

Christian DBT is a faith-based adaptation of traditional DBT. It integrates Christian beliefs and practices with the therapeutic techniques of DBT. This approach is designed for individuals who wish to incorporate their faith into their mental health treatment. Several of us at Fig Tree have gotten together to create materials and teachings that adapt the skills to the Christian Worldview. For instance, Wise Mind is a concept developed by Linehan to identify the state of mind each person can achieve to make good choices. As Christians, we believe Wise Mind also involves the Holy Spirit and our ability to access His wisdom at all times. We do not believe we can achieve wisdom without the Holy Spirit. We have taken each of the DBT concepts and analyzed them under the Christian Worldview prior to teaching them to others.

Research and Resources

I, Tina Motley, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, have had the opportunity to lead Dialectical Behavior Therapy, or DBT, groups since 2014. During this time, I have observed firsthand how the skills taught in these sessions can have a significant impact on the lives of those who participate. Although the skills themselves might not be revolutionary and could even be considered common sense, there is something truly remarkable about the way that Dr. Marsha Linehan has thoughtfully combined them. This integration creates an effect that many might view as magical, as it offers individuals practical tools to navigate their challenges more effectively.

Throughout my time facilitating various groups, I have truly appreciated the experiences and the impact they have had on both myself and the participants. However, I have often dreamed of a future where I can weave elements of the Christian faith into the curriculum. I believe that by doing so, I can create a more enriching and transformative experience that will offer deeper healing and support to those who take part. This integration has the potential to enhance the overall effectiveness of the program and provide individuals with a stronger foundation on which to build their personal growth and healing journey. So we decided to develop our first “think tank”.

A group of individuals here at Fig Tree has come together to form a collaborative team, often referred to as our “DBT think tank.” Our primary focus is to explore and examine various concepts that we believe are important in creating materials that not only align with our faith but also showcase the most effective aspects of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). The team includes several knowledgeable professionals: David Hawxhurst, who is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Lauren Hetlzer, who holds a License in Clinical Social Work (LCSW), Jen Lefwich, also an LCSW, and Stephanie Boarman, who has earned her Master’s degree in Arts (MA). Each of us has set aside significant time to thoughtfully engage with these concepts from both a spiritual and psychological perspective, with the goal of developing materials that are as accurate and insightful as possible.

We recognize that this initial group may not operate as seamlessly as we would like. However, we are optimistic that those who attend will provide us with valuable feedback. This feedback can assist us in refining and improving our materials to ensure they meet the needs and expectations of our participants more effectively.
