A faith-based approach to DBT that integrates practical emotional skills with biblical truth and spiritual growth.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy, or DBT, is a practical, skills-based approach that helps people manage emotions, navigate distress, and improve relationships. Originally developed by psychologist Marsha Linehan, DBT has been widely used to support individuals struggling with emotional dysregulation, anxiety, depression, and interpersonal conflict.
At Fig Tree Therapy, we have seen DBT skills help many people. They offer practical tools that can lead to meaningful change in everyday life. At the same time, we also believe that people are best cared for when treatment honors both sound clinical practice and the truth of a Christian worldview.
That is where Christian DBT is different.
What Is Christian DBT?
Christian DBT is a faith-based adaptation of traditional DBT. It keeps the practical strengths of DBT while examining its concepts through the lens of Scripture, biblical wisdom, and Christian discipleship.
This is not simply traditional DBT with a few spiritual references added in. It is a thoughtful integration of clinical skill-building with a Christian understanding of truth, healing, suffering, growth, and transformation.
At Fig Tree Therapy, several of us have worked together to develop materials that adapt DBT concepts in a way that is both clinically responsible and biblically grounded. We have taken the time to look carefully at each skill, ask how it aligns with Scripture, and consider how it should be taught from a Christian worldview.
The Core Skills of DBT
DBT focuses on four primary areas:
Mindfulness
Learning to slow down, pay attention, and become more aware of thoughts, emotions, and reactions.
Distress Tolerance
Developing the ability to endure pain, disappointment, or emotional discomfort without making the situation worse.
Emotion Regulation
Understanding emotional patterns and learning how to respond to emotions in healthier, steadier ways.
Interpersonal Effectiveness
Strengthening communication, boundary-setting, and relational wisdom.
These are valuable life skills. They help people function more effectively, respond more wisely, and relate to others with greater clarity and strength.
How Christian DBT Differs
While we value much of what DBT offers, we also believe that every therapeutic model should be examined in light of truth.
For example, traditional DBT teaches the concept of Wise Mind, which refers to the integration of emotion and reason in making sound decisions. We appreciate that framework. At the same time, as Christians, we believe wisdom is not merely the result of internal balance. True wisdom comes from God. The Holy Spirit is essential in guiding discernment, conviction, and clarity.
In Christian DBT, we teach skills with that understanding in mind.
We also recognize that some aspects of traditional DBT require greater nuance when viewed through a biblical lens. DBT often encourages movement away from rigid, black-and-white thinking, and in many emotional and relational situations, that is wise and helpful. However, as Christians, we also believe in absolute truth. While human experiences may be complex, truth itself is not endlessly flexible. Scripture remains our anchor.
Our goal is not to dismiss what is helpful in DBT, but to use what is helpful while remaining faithful to what we believe is true.
Faith Is Central, Not Peripheral
For many people, faith is not a side issue. It is central to identity, meaning, hope, and healing.
Christian DBT creates space for that reality by incorporating biblical reflection, prayer, Christian virtues, and a faith-informed understanding of suffering, responsibility, grace, forgiveness, and growth. Rather than separating spiritual life from emotional health, this approach seeks to care for the whole person.
We believe mental health treatment should not require Christians to leave their faith at the door.
Who Can Benefit from Christian DBT?
Christian DBT may be a strong fit for individuals who want practical tools for managing emotions and relationships while also seeking care that reflects their Christian beliefs.
This approach can be helpful for those struggling with:
- anxiety
- depression
- stress and overwhelm
- emotional dysregulation
- relationship difficulties
- reactivity and impulsive patterns
Because DBT is skills-based, participants leave with tools they can use in everyday life. Christian DBT offers those same practical benefits within a framework that also supports spiritual growth and biblical reflection.
The Importance of Community
We also believe that healing is often strengthened in community.
Group work offers a unique opportunity for people to learn, practice, and grow alongside others. It provides support, accountability, and encouragement in a shared setting. At a time when loneliness and disconnection are contributing to so much emotional suffering, meaningful community matters.
At Fig Tree Therapy, we hope to offer spaces where people can grow not only in emotional skill, but also in connection, support, and faith.
Our Heart Behind This Work
I have been leading DBT groups since 2014, and over the years I have seen how powerful these skills can be. They are practical, accessible, and often deeply effective.
At the same time, I have long believed there was a need for a more fully integrated approach — one that retains the strengths of DBT while remaining anchored in a Christian worldview. That desire is what led us to begin building Christian DBT material at Fig Tree Therapy.
This work has been shaped through thoughtful collaboration, clinical experience, and a sincere desire to offer care that is both faithful and effective. We know this kind of integration requires wisdom and humility, and we are committed to doing it thoughtfully.
A Whole-Person Approach to Healing
Christian DBT offers more than symptom management. It provides a framework for growth that addresses emotional health, relational patterns, and spiritual formation together.
For those who want care that is both clinically informed and biblically grounded, Christian DBT may offer a meaningful path forward.
At Fig Tree Therapy, our goal is to provide care that is thoughtful, honest, faith-centered, and genuinely helpful. Christian DBT is one of the ways we seek to do that.
